MALABARI GOATS FOR MILK

As poor man’s cows Malabari goats are wellknown for their high prolificacy,feed efficiency,disease resistance and milk yield.Highly nutritious nature of their milk and meat make them more popular.Malabari goats are originated from Northern parts of kerala especially from Vadakara,Tellichery and Kannur region.They are seen in different colours ranging from white to black.Medium sized head,elongated ears,Tussels hanging on either side of the head are it’s peculiarities.
Adult goat will weigh about 30-40Kg at an age of one year.It’s daily maintenance requirement is 200-250 gms of concentrate and 2-3Kg of green fodder.Miltch goats need 300-400gms of concentrate per litre of milk produced.On scientific rearing they are capable of producing 2-3Kg of milk per day.
Animal husbandry department,Kerala livestock development board, Kerala agricultural university and some Non governmental organizations are taking more efforts to conserve and popularise this native breed.They are reared at goat farms located at Kommeri(Kannur dist),Dhoni(Palakkad dist),Mannuthy(Trichur dist) and Pilicode(Kasargod dist).
